Worry Bacon or Heartache Blubber?

The German expression “Kummerspeck” is often translated as “grief bacon” or “worry bacon” – it describes the added pounds that magically appear around your waist after a breakup.

Personally, I think both translations are wrong, as “bacon” is a misnomer, “blubber” would be my preferred paraphrase.

Now this little penguin looks miserable enough and has blubber around its waist, so its girth qualifies as “heartache blubber” but I wonder if it is really due to emotional overeating in its case?

The Shape of Woman

The woman on the right is the sculpture of Vénus by Aristide Maillot in Perpignan. The sculpture on the right stands in the foyer of a student dormitory in Prag, unfortunately I did not find a plaque with the artist’s name.

A Real Life Heroin-e

Luigi Toscano / Akut Gegen das Vergessen

This mural in Mannheim by Luigi Toscano is called “Against Forgetting” and shows two concentration camp survivors. On the woman’s face is written: “We have to remember the past but we mustn’t live in it.” She is a symbol for surviving, not forgetting, but moving on. She is a heroine.
