Friendly Friday: Hands & Feet week II

Fish Nouveau

A fish with distinctly human features – eyes, nose and even a moustache reminiscent of German emperors displayed on a fountain in Schwetzingen.

The fountain was erected in honour of Friedrich I, Grand Duke of Baden, and his wife, Luise (daughter of the first German emperor Wilhelm I).

The two are seen on either side, the shield of arms of Baden in the middle (a red stripe on a yellow field if it were in colour) and the strange fish underneath.

I’ve tried to find an explanation for this whimsical waterspout and could only find a description stating that the fish head is supposed to show an affinity to the art nouveau style of the time. I find this explanation less than satisfying and there is something distinctly fishy about it, to my mind at least.

My New Friends

After my foray into Barbie photography I saw this book called Little Mannheim – a coffee table book with little figures out and about in the city of Mannheim. The photographer, Benedikt Hild, takes photos of the kind of little people that are used to populate railway models. And I was inspired. When I was in a toyshop yesterday for something completely different, I looked at the little people on display and I was immediately taken by a collection of nudists. I feel this is the beginning of a fun friendship!

It’s never too late

I never played with Barbie dolls much when I was little and to be honest, I never much liked them. But I bought one as an Easter present for a little girl and I have been making clothes and jewellery for her this last week – I learned new ways to apply old skills.

Before wrapping her and her belongings I have started to take photos of her – and I am learning about staging and lighting and field of focus. Here are the first of hopefully a few more photos of her. Some more learning ahead and I have to do it in the next few days.

Recycling or Precycling?

Germans are pretty good at recycling. We sort our waste almost religiously – there are strict guidelines what to put in which coloured bin (and the sanctions for not following the rules are pretty harsh: the garbage just isn’t picked up if the collectors notice an infringement). Unfortunately, the rules and colours differ in different areas which can be confusing but there is usually someone happy to lecture you at length on the correct way. Most beverages are sold in containers which are part of an extensive deposit system. Glass collection containers are overflowing, particularly after the holidays. And clothes collection bins from private and charitable organisations can be found everywhere.

However, Germany is also a good example that recycling sounds good but that the resulting warm, fuzzy feeling about “living green” comes with lots of problems: plastic garbage is on the increase, most of the collected plastic is burnt rather than recycled, collected clothes are either ripped up and burnt or shipped to Africa where the local clothing industry is severely damaged.

So – isn’t precycling the way to go? “Precycling” is a neologism to describe the old concept of waste minimisation or prevention. Plastic bags in stores are sold rather than given away for free. Stores encourage reusable bags for vegetables and fruit, the scales are adjusted accordingly. It’s now possible (somewhat hampered by COVID – but what isn’t?) to bring your own containers to bakeries and butcheries rather than having your goods packed in plastic and paper. Stores where only loose products are sold are on the rise, even big supermarkets now have “loose product” stations.

When it comes to clothes and consumer items – there is a real simple solution: Buy less. The question: “Do I really need this?” can be quite helpful.

Moving

“Being on the way” mostly meant being on my bike this year. As it is a bit difficult to photograph myself on the bike, so Wynona Rider (that’s the name of my bike) features mostly on her own.

Other bicycles are more communal. Especially those for hire which are becoming more and more common around here.

Although currently the weather is not conducive to biking, there are always a few intrepid cyclists.

I, on the other hand, rather agree with this one:

The best times are the breaks.

Treating myself and others

It’s still dark outside but this early morning treat gets me going. For years I couldn’t drink coffee without the most severe heartburn, now that I can drink it again without problems, I consider it special.

Henry gets special treats occasionally and he likes it just as much as the next cat. He wears his feelings on the cheek, so to speak.

And is it too early to talk of Easter? [Yes, it is! even if the stores think otherwise.]

These are chocolate treats and not really special in Germany. Around Easter time they are rather commonplace. What makes them unusual are their looks: they represent cockchafer beetles, heralds of spring, and not, as horrified English visitors have remarked, cockroaches.

Finally, only yesterday Nancy had asked for tasty treats for her A Photo a Week Challenge (great minds think alike! – check out her site and the contributions) and I posted this photo:
