Oha!

Being surprised, Germans might say: “Oha!”. People from Osterode im Harz apparently say it all the time, they even say it on their car registrations plates.

Major craving. Do I need to spell it out?
For want of actual people, particularly grandchildren:

We do our fox and hounds running trails every Sunday in winter, every Saturday in summer.
Before we run, we get instructions.

Sometimes obscure, sometimes understandable (to us, at least).
We run (or walk) in every weather, every season, every terrain:
And then came – Corona.

Hint: look what it says on the back of his neck!
Our group has run without a break every week for 33 years – come rain or shine or Christmas Eve or Easter Monday. Would we let a stupid *§$%*$!! virus ruin our weekends? Of course not! We kept meeting.
Via zoom. And we had trails. In completely new and innovative ways.
One week we all dressed up in our finest gear, each in the comfort of our own home and we jogged on the spot. At various points we had to answer questions and whoever got them wrong had to do a penance, jumping jacks or squats or the like. For the next week, we ran in our own area, marked the trail in chalk, and documented it with photos. We had adventure quests (like an Easter egg hunt except no eggs but rather little bottles). Another time we ran and each time we came to an intersection we let the throw of a die decide in which direction to continue. And one time we charted our run with a running app and tried to draw a picture (before you puzzle too much: I was not a very good artist but it was fun).

I’ve already introduced my discovery of Corona Man and his faithful, yet-to-be-named-dog. But I’ve looked through the old toy boxes and found some more to play around with like this ice cream truck:

And there are always 32 mice to play with. Can you spot the exchange student in the back?

This board used to stand in my office at school and one of the teachers had one with frogs so we decided to start an exchange program.

What would working together be without the occasional break? And if you can have it in the sun, all the better!

This is from a light installation called “Winterlichter” in a park in Mannheim.

I don’t know if that was an art installation or just a yard where an art installation was being prepared or stored. It looked out of place and hidden at the same time.

I have no idea what this is supposed to be or who did it or why. Found it standing in the front yard of an apartment building in the centre of Frankfurt.

Definitely NOT beautiful. This figure, I think, belongs to a shop selling surplus army supplies.

As I live at least 400km away from any coast I have to rely on old holiday photos and pictorial representations of sea creatures. In all cases, these were “out of their element”.
