You don’t know what you’ve been missing

I don’t think we miss colour in winter quite as much as people used to because they were more limited without artificial dyes and the like, e.g. I wear a bright yellow anorak in winter (I want to be seen on the road!). There are plastic toys and boxes etc. in our house. We can buy flowers and fruits all year round. There is tv and outside there are large billboards, often in glaring colours. Winter is not as grey as it used to be.

But then the first trees start blooming in soft pinks and whites, the first crocusses appear, and dandelions, specks of yellow and blue and then all of a sudden the riot of tulips start and looking at them one realises: I have been missing colour in my life.

On sunny days, there are almost more people than flowers in this botanical garden.

Friday Fun: Colours

The promise

I had a stroll through the vineyards around here yesterday, and no green yet sprouting there. But the cherry and apple trees are busy putting out buds, even old and gnarly ones.

Limited contact walking

We can’t go far because of the rules for social distancing (which is a misnomer, really, physical distancing would be a better name for it) but we are allowed out of the house to go for a walk or to go shopping.  We can go for a walk in the company of persons from the same household.  So we combined grocery shopping and driving a small distance to go for a walk in the local woods.  The trees are still bare and the ground is covered with brown leaves from last autumn but looking a bit closer one can find the first fresh green leaves and also flowers, in this case heath violets, pilewort, and wood anemone.  I’m not quite sure how the grape hyacinth got into that part of the woods but there it was.
