Lagomorph

I’ve just learned of the English name “lagomorphs” for all kinds of hare-like creatures (taxonomical order of Lagomorpha from the Greek lagos = hare and morphé = form). In German, they are called Hasenartige, i.e. hare-like or hare-kind.
I kind of love the word, in fact, it is my new favourite word.

Follow the hare

This is my awake (awoke?) week. It seems I have used up all my awaken (awoken) photos this week already: my awake coffee mug, my cat waking me when it is still dark, even a sunrise somewhere. But I know (and the mirror confirms this) that I will never look as awake as this hare, alert, vigilant, sharp, and wired. I need something to awaken my morning bearing.

I’m a fan of hares

This hare was far away in the fields last week and as I was trying to get a photo of it a man approached me and asked – quite suspiciously, I thought – what I was shooting. It took him a bit to see the hare and we both came very close to violating physical distance rules because I wanted to let him look through my camera. Of course, the hare who had been munching happily on the green stalks took its chance and disappeared.

I seem to have a knack to catch hares from the rear.

This one did its best to hide, keeping low in the grass.

But when it realised that the game was up, it upped and disappeared in the woods.

And the same story last year, when the grass was already higher.

After the harvest surprise
I saw this stork stalking through the cut off wheat stalks (oh my!) and grabbed my camera. If I noticed the two spots in the back to the left of him, I didn’t give them a second thought.

I got closer. Magnificent bird, I thought, totally focused on the stork.

I zoomed in. What a wonderful bird!

Only at home, when I had transferred the photos to my computer and saw them on the larger screen, I realised that those brown, indistinct lumps had ears.

A soldier of the Long Patrol

The Long Patrol is a novel by Brian Jacques and part of the Redwall series. It is also the name of the specialized, elite army of hares that fight for good at the side of the creatures living in Redwall Abbey. This bright and alert fellow looks like he could well be part of those fierce fighters.
