I’m a fan of hospitals … not

Not quite true or rather not as simple as that. I’m not a fan although I am very happy that hospitals and the people who work in them exist.

From doctors to nurses to medical technicians to kitchen and cleaning staff, they are all needed and were needed even in times gone by.

Talking about times gone by – this is the hospital of Lindenfels where I spent almost a week some seven years ago, and received good care. It has since closed down because it wasn’t financially viable, they said, being in a rural area. For the people of the area it was not a good decision, they now have to drive a long way to get to the next medical facility with emergency rooms. There are plans underfoot to open it again.

In any case, I hope that Jez (of the I’m a fan of … photo challenge) also had somebody to comfort him like this little guy, and gets well soon.

I’m a fan of bees

I came across this banner the other day and how could I not agree, spelling mistakes and all. It reads: Without bees there is no beer – that’s why we are protesting here.

And here is message from the bees themselves, presumably:

Looking at you humans we notice you are doing as badly as we are: chomping down on too many insecticides and pesticides, there are too many built-up areas and too few wilderness areas. If you carefully observe us bees here at this hotel as well as our cousins in the wild, you will be able to perceive how you yourselves are doing. Kind regards, the bees.

Hence: Watch out for bees below!

I’m a fan of dummies

or pacifiers if you prefer American English.

I came across this fence:

and wondered. So I went closer:

A dummy gallery – toddlers bring their dummies here when they are ready to give them up.

I’ve come across a similar installation before:

I’m not sure that she is ready yet:

I’m a fan of pigs

Whether it’s the real pig,

the art imitates life pig,

or the anything goes pig (sorry, no picture of “Pigs in Space”).

I’ve never understood why butchers love to feature happy little pigs looking forward to end their lives as sausages on their signs.

But they are all Very Important Pigs, it seems.

I’m a fan of kitsch

“Heightened kitsch” with a touch of irony – but it’s still kitsch.

Kitsch seems to thrive in gardens and on house fronts.

Mostly it works best if the kitsch is defect in some way.

Before you get overwhelmed, however, throw it all out.

I’m a fan of cormorants

I know that cormorants can be become pests if they are too numerous and fishers don’t like them because they can decimate fish numbers quite rapidly. This is a lonely cormorant though, which I have never seen in company – if it is the same one. These photos were taken a year apart.

I’m a fan of giraffes

On Friday I rediscovered this giraffe (or possibly not) amongst my archived photos for the Friendly Friday Challenge.

It made me realise that I have more photos of giraffes. I’ve always liked these animals and it has upset me when I read that their conservation status has been moved from “least concern” to “vulnerable”.

No matter how difficult the task is, we will manage it!
