Only half. Half-timbered, that is. There are lots of these around, this particular yard is in Michelstadt im Odenwald. Ragtag Daily Prompt: Timber

The Roman limes, the fortified border of the Roman Empire in North Eastern Europe, has left traces which can still be found almost 2000 years later. But a lot of the fortification were wooden. In Vielbrunn im Odenwald they reconstructed a limes watchtower on stone foundations.

The tower is open on weekends and public holidays. If you arrive, like I did, when it’s closed you can look at the construction on several large information boards.
I think I’ll be back to have a look inside.

Pentecost weekend is excursion time for many Germans. If the weather plays along – all the better. The three cyclists certainly liked it that way.

For some the destination was the Bienenmarkt (bee market) in Michelstadt, the biggest county fair in the Odenwald. Locally it has the reputation of being a “puddle party” because of the traditionally wet weather. As you can see, tradition was not followed this year, and three cabins of the ferris wheel prove the point.

Inside the Einhard’s Basilica in Michelstadt. Built for the chronist of Charlemagne, Einhard abandoned the basilica and transferred his intended burial site to Seligenstadt (his church there housed important relics which made Seligenstadt into a pilgrimage site) thus saving the one in Steinbach from major renovations and thus preserving many of the Carolingian features.

As the evening moves on –

And then, night.
The images are based on a woodcut by the book illustrator Fritz Kredel who has a room dedicated to his work at the Museum in Michelstadt im Odenwald, where I took the photo.
