The Upper Rhine Valley stretches from Basel in Switzerland to above Frankfurt. It’s up to 40km wide. In Bingen the valley narrows and becomes a gorge. On both sides of the upper and middle Rhine is wine growing country.

🎵 Because the girls are jolly and spry, and the throats of the boys are dry! 🎵🎵
Warum ist es am Rhein so schön
Am Rhein so schön?
Weil die Mädel so lustig
Und die Burschen so durstig.
The Middle Rhine is a narrow valley with towns and villages at the banks of the river and steep hills on both sides, roads on either side and train tracks too.
I’ve just come back from the Middle Rhine wine region (between Bingen and Koblenz), part of which is a UNESCO heritage site. It is quite breathtaking to see the steep slope vineyards on either side. Getting up the steps between the different vineyards must be even more breathtaking, literally.
