Must haves at the Oktoberfest

I found this First Aid vending machine at the fairground where the world famous Oktoberfest in Munich takes place each year.  It sells paper and desinfectant tissues, sticking plaster, antacid tablets, and condoms.  That should tell you something about what’s going on there each September (sic!).

This is for Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge.  More oddballs can be found here.

Traces of the past in more ways than one.  The fountain in front of the main building of the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität in München (Munich, Germany) was built in the middle of the 19th century. It has a pendant across the street.

The place is called Geschwister-Scholl-Platz in remembrance of the students Sophie and Hans Scholl who died because of their protest against the nazi regime.

And lastly, I stood in this fountain with about 20 others many years ago when I was a student there and the picture was taken for an election poster for the students’ council.

In Munich, there is a “standing wave” in the Eisbach (literally: ice brook) just before this branch of the river Isar is routed underground and later joins the main river again.  If the weather permits it, one can settle down at the banks and watch other people getting wet – while performing heroic deeds.

Fighting the fire

Sankt FlorianSt Florian is the patron saint of firefighters.  This statue of him was erected in 1991 in front of the old building of the Munich fire brigade.

O heiliger Sankt Florian, verschon’ mein Haus, zünd’ and’re an“, this not-really-serious prayer in German is a wellknown saying: “O Holy St Florian, please spare my house, set fire to another one”.

To cover or not to cover

Monopteros

One word photo challenge is “exposure” this week.

I took this photo last year in May. It’s from the English Garden in Munich, next to a pseudo-Greek, open temple built in the 19th century called Monopteros.  The lawns surrounding it have for years been used for sunbathing by the people of Munich. The trend to less and less clothing started in the 1970s with topless students (me amongst them) and nowadays it’s quite normal to take off all your clothes, weather permitting. Ironic only that on my visit the Monopteros itself was covered completely due to repair works.

City surfing

Another summer collage in response to värikollaasit:

The river Isar runs through Munich.  In the middle of the city a permanent wave is formed and it is said that this is where river surfing was first practiced.  Now during summer there is always a crowd watching as the surfers display their skills.
