Three Different Types of Open Space

A huge open space for most of the year in the middle of the city: the Wiesn, the place where the biggest Octoberfest in the world takes place each September.

Brandenburg is as flat as country can be and there is nothing like seemingly endless skies to feel out in the open.

At the other end of Germany, the flatness of the Upper Rhine Valley is bordered by the Odenwald on one side, the Pfälzer Wald on the other side.

It’s the sky in all three examples that purports the sense of open country.

Colour can enhance that sense of wideness.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: In the big wide open spaces

Travel Challenge #6

I was nominated by Teresa  and by Margaret to post one travel picture a day for ten days without explanation, then to nominate someone else to participate. That’s 10 days, 10 travel images, and 10 nominations.

The photos I am going to show in this challenged are from travels around Germany and where chosen to introduce my German language students to various German sites.

Here is my sixth one:

Today I would like to nominate Agatha (you were foolish enough to like my #5 post – and with a name like “40thousandkm” – what did you expect?). There is no pressure to participate, though. But if you share some of your travel photos, have fun! I’ll definitely have a look (please send me a link).

A toothy perspective

And while I was remembering Munich yesterday, here is the statue of Bavaria – the lady and her lion who each year (except for this one) overlook the Oktoberfest at the Theresienwiese.

Walking Man

The Walking Man walks in Munich alongside the Leopoldstraße. I have to add non-square photos of the sculpture by Jonathan Borofsky to do it justice, though.

The photos were taken on the same day but taken from different sides excluding or including the greenery which makes for a completely different perspective.

My Square Perspective no. 8 is linked to The life of B.

Stairs are paths, too.

Flowers and missiles

I came across this mural in München, Germany (Munich).  Intellectually, I understand the juxtaposition between war/war machinery and the beauty found in flowers and traditional ceramics and porcelain.  But overall – I am not really convinced that it works for me.

Must haves at the Oktoberfest

I found this First Aid vending machine at the fairground where the world famous Oktoberfest in Munich takes place each year.  It sells paper and desinfectant tissues, sticking plaster, antacid tablets, and condoms.  That should tell you something about what’s going on there each September (sic!).

Just a drop

Traces of the past in more ways than one.  The fountain in front of the main building of the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität in München (Munich, Germany) was built in the middle of the 19th century. It has a pendant across the street.

The place is called Geschwister-Scholl-Platz in remembrance of the students Sophie and Hans Scholl who died because of their protest against the nazi regime.

And lastly, I stood in this fountain with about 20 others many years ago when I was a student there and the picture was taken for an election poster for the students’ council.

In Munich, there is a “standing wave” in the Eisbach (literally: ice brook) just before this branch of the river Isar is routed underground and later joins the main river again.  If the weather permits it, one can settle down at the banks and watch other people getting wet – while performing heroic deeds.
