The gallows of Beerfelden is a scary place at any time of year. In winter it is a particularly forlorn, depressing place. It was designed to strike the fear of God in the hearts of wrongdoers.

Ladder in the Sky
The Odenwald, the low mountain range to the east of us, sports a new tower. On top of the Tromm (a mountain/hill of 577m altitude) stood the Irene Tower (named after the Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria) but the wooden construction was destroyed by rot and bark beetles and demolished in 2020. In its place the new Tromm Tower was erected, a beautiful, modern construction made of wood and metal. It’s beautiful, modern, 33 m high, leaning over the side of the hill and granting a beautiful 360° panoramic view of the Odenwald. It opened to the public in June this year.

Different Strokes for Different Folks
While this gull is flying into the infinite distance
the Vedra is making shoreward, towards Roker Beach.
Thirty years earlier we were on the opposite side of the world, at the lagoon of Nature’s Valley near Plettenberg Baai in South Africa.
I wear my hair short and I can style it without much fuss. But folk with proper manes might rely on the help of others to look their best.
I also don’t care for cigarettes or pipes but the Odenwälder Hannes is smoking day in, day out.
Two Houses, How Many Window Styles?
Both these houses are from Michelstadt im Odenwald. I was fascinated by the different kind of windows, all coming together to one style, sort of.

The contrast between the sandstone and the white front, the windows with the rounded top on the ground floor, mirrored in the second floor balcony door cum window. The grey and white half-timbered style on the top floor with the small oblang windows. The combination of both styles in the little tower cum bay windows.
And here is another house with typical architectural details of the area. The creme coloured shingles set off by the simple oblong windows, set off by grey and brown frames. The sandstone set-ins with grilles leading to the basement. The angular bay window jutting out and decorated with half-timbered details in dark wood.
