How To Advertise with Gallows

The former place of execution near the town of Beerfelden im Odenwald has a certain attraction to visitors. It lies outside the town on an open hill. A steady stream of cars stop, one takes a short stroll around the gallows, glances to the opposite hills, adds a few morose thoughts and drives off.

The town of Beerfelden thought they could profit from this steady stream of visitors and instead of them bypassing the town, one could lure them to stay awhile and spend some money.

Last time I was there, this boulder had been added to the site.

The verse (a pretty bad doggerel, not a parody but just really bad poetry) admonishes the visitors that it would be a mistake to leave without paying the inns and shops of Beerfelden a visit (only a 12 minute walk!).

As to my thoughts of this PR I’ll keep quiet, as it is

Pentecost Weekend Trios

Pentecost weekend is excursion time for many Germans. If the weather plays along – all the better. The three cyclists certainly liked it that way.

For some the destination was the Bienenmarkt (bee market) in Michelstadt, the biggest county fair in the Odenwald. Locally it has the reputation of being a “puddle party” because of the traditionally wet weather. As you can see, tradition was not followed this year, and three cabins of the ferris wheel prove the point.

We’re Here Because of Beer

I found an additional definition of “fleshment” in Collins Dictionary: “excitement or stimulation via previous experience”. Even though it’s flagged as archaic, the concept is still very much alive and well.

We passed the Schmucker brewery in Mossautal yesterday. This beer delivery truck stood in front of the hotel and pub. The weather was gorgeous and many, many Pentecoast Monday day trippers succumbed to the lure of the various brews advertised on the side of the truck. No doubt they remembered the stimulation from other times. If they do yield to the temptation on a regular basis the first Collins definition “the act of fattening” will be seen on them.

PS: We stopped and had a wonderfully fresh lager on tap. All had a full glass, I had one long sip – I was the driver.

Einhard Left Me!

Inside the Einhard’s Basilica in Michelstadt. Built for the chronist of Charlemagne, Einhard abandoned the basilica and transferred his intended burial site to Seligenstadt (his church there housed important relics which made Seligenstadt into a pilgrimage site) thus saving the one in Steinbach from major renovations and thus preserving many of the Carolingian features.
