2017 was not an easy year for wine in the Alsace. Frost in spring and a very early harvest resulted in low quantity but good quality. Overall, 2017 was a good vintage.

Aren’t You Glad You Have a Machine?
This sculpture has been erected in honour of Karin I, the Fountain Queen of 1981, in Oberursel (and don’t ask me anything else about the privileges and duties of a fountain queen). It is called the Wäschfraa-Brunnen or washerwoman fountain.
The square is called “An der Bleiche” and there are many squares and streets named in the area or even in Germany with this or a similar name. It translates as bleach and it was the place where clothes could be dried and bleached in the sun. It was located near running water where the women did their washing.
He Needs Must Travel Through this Hollow Way
The title is a line from Friedrich Schillers drama Wilhelm Tell which is known by every German, I dare say (even if some might not know what the source is): “Durch diese hohle Gasse muss er kommen“. It’s quoted often, sometimes more or less appropriately.
They Are Sparkling!
Today Debbie’s Sunday word is spark and as we are currently well into the fifth season of the year, i.e. carnival – so I had to show the little sparks called Funkemariechen who are a staple of German carnival. Sparkling little maries.
