Come back tomorrow, please!
Linked to One Word Sunday: Treat.
So I mixed up last Sunday’s prompt and this Sunday’s when I prepared the posts in advance – and the little dog waiting for a treat was showcased under the heading “soon” – which worked. So this primrose, originally titled “soon“, is now a treat – and it will be in a few more days (or rather “will have been” as it is a photo from last spring).

Rewriting history
From 16th century until 1885 this square in Frankfurt am Main was known as the “Judenmarkt” (the Jewish market). In 1885 it was named officially as “Börneplatz” to honour Julius Börne, an early 19th century journalist born in the Jewish Ghetto of Frankfurt. In 1935 it was changed to “Dominikanerplatz” as names of Jewish people were eradicated by the Nazi government. In 1978 this injustice was rectified by the Frankfurt town council and the square was once again known as “Börneplatz”. While excavating the ground around the square for planned new buildings, the foundations of several antique Jewish buildings, two mikwehs amongst them, were found. After long discussions, the square was remodelled as the “Neuer Börneplatz” (new Börnesquare) which now includes a memorial with the almost 12,000 names of the known Jewish Frankfurt citizens who were victims of the Nazi annihilation policy.

St Nicholas
Today is St Nicholas’ Day – children will put their boots in front of the door and listen for some heavy steps pounding outside and then slowly peek around the door to see if he left chocolates, nuts, and tangerines.

Hand me that whatchamacallit!
If you read Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman you will know that there was a Sir Joshua Device, a Sir Humphrey Gadget, a Pietr Gizmo, a Cyrus T. Doodad and an Ella Reader Widget – they all invented “things so simple and universally useful that everyone forgot that they’d ever actually needed to be invented” and the utensils were named after them. I’m pretty sure that one of the thingies in my photos has been invented by Angus Watchamacallit, a Scottish inventor of (forgotten) renown.

Pick up your colouring pencils

I’ve been playing around with colouring pencils and the image compare tool allows me to concentrate on the colours rather the subject. FYI: I drew the snails to give to my German language students (absolute beginners/illiterate students). They can hold up the picture when they want me to slow down.
