True trail

When I hear trail I cannot help but think of paths marked with flour (or chalk, and occasionally completely different stuff) followed by mad people whom I happen to call friends, running, walking, skipping, crawling … following the “hash” and calling “on on”. An arrow with lines is called “true trail” and if you find this you know you are on the right track, and beer (or water) won’t be too far away.

The coarse stones and coarser roof tiles of the “Blaue Hut”, one of the three remaining towers of the medieval town wall of Weinheim.  The name comes from the slate tiles of the original roof.

Home is where the heart is

Blauer Hut

Believe it or not – this was my playground when I grew up.  No, I’m not of noble descent – our house was on the other side of the wall in the old part of town.  One of the weirder influences this had on me is that I associate peacocks with a fuzzy, snug, and warm feeling.  I remember that visitors staying overnight with my parents usually came to breakfast with a harrowed look on their faces and “What was THAT noise last night??!” on their lips.  But to this day the shrill sound of a peacock’s call says “home” to me.

The future is on the horizon

Looking out from the Odenwald in Hesse over the upper Rhine valley.  The  wind turbines are all on the other side of the Rhine in the State of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) where politics were much more conducive to develop renewable power alternatives.
