A Great Disc

I remember seeing this sculpture in Darmstadt and I saw it as a geometric structure, a circle filled with cubic shapes. It is located in front of the Staatstheater at the Georg-Büchner-Platz. It’s called Grande Disco, by Arnaldo Pomodoro.

The landmark of Darmstadt can be seen in the middle, a pictorial rendering of the Hochzeitsturm (wedding tower) which is also called the Fünf-Finger-Turm (five finger tower). This tower is a superb example of art nouveau architecture, a work all by itself.

However, when I prepared this post and I looked at the thumbnail of the photo, i.e. a very small version of the photo, all I could see was a flower.

When Pigs Make Merry

I’ve shown a collection of butchery signs before. I still keep wondering why the pigs depicted on butchery signs always smile and appear to be really happy. That post is kind of dismembered (ha!) so I will add the relevant pictures below.

This mural on the wall of a butchery takes this concept of happy pigs a step further. It’s a family of pigs at a sunday feast with ham and liverwurst and a coffee cake. And a single pig about to happily munch a whole chain of pork sausages.

Weird but also well executed.

This Art is Grave

My recent visit to a cemetery resulted in a slew of public art, some better than others. While I’m guessing that the middle one and the right one were on the grave of cat lovers, I know for sure that the bird on the grave on the left was made by the artist who is buried here himself.

This is the deco at the graveside of Sepp Herberger, the German national football coach from 1954 (when the national team could still win major championships).
