I remember diving into this fountain one summer night as part of a stunt to get our group elected to the ASTA (the student council). It worked, btw.

The first time I saw this incredible insect I thought it was a hummingbird. Yet – there are no hummingbirds in Europe! I was dumbfounded.
Luckily, I had a knowledgeable friend with me who explained about the hawk moth to me, a hummingbird hawk moth in this case so I wasn’t too far off and not alone in my mistake. It’s not a very common moth but not that rare either and I was delighted that I managed a few shots of the insect while it was feeding.

It’s been a few years (six, to be exact) since we were in Sunderland and took the opportunity to visit the National Glass Centre. The exhibits range from the mundane (Pyrex measuring jugs) to the sublime (works of art made of glass). And of course, the glass blowing demonstration is a must.

A friend of ours was missing her key after a picnic. My dedicated husband spent a good hour on his knees to look for the single, small key – to no avail. She received a HUGE keyring as a present when we met her next.
