But Who Invented This?

I found out that this watchamacallit is actually a locking device. I wonder if it was named after Sir Joshua Device? On the other hand, it’s a handy gadget so maybe it was invented by Sir Humphrey Gadget? Other contenders could be Pietr Gizmo from Russia, or Ella Reader Widget – an American as was Cyrus T. Doodat. Germans have been known to invent strange little contraptions of which nobody remembers their names and are just called thingies or Dingsbums, so Hans-Joachim Dingsbums might be an option as the originator.

The transportation grid operating on an infinite number of levels crashed to the lowest level because of a feasibility overload. Cars which were normally flying on an infinite number of levels while maintaining their same functionality suddenly had to watch their bumpers. It was turmoil!

The word hum is related to the Middle High German hummen and thus to the modern German Hummel – meaning bumble bee. Fun fact: While bees need at least 10 °C to be out and about bumble bee workers fly already at 6 °C because the vibration of their pectoral muscles vibrate to generate heat. Which in turn makes the fairly loud humming noise of bumble bees.
