Who was the ringleader?

Sheep follow their frontman or rather, front-sheep. If he or she takes a wrong turn, they all go wrong.

Two days ago in a small town in Frankonia a group of sheep got separated from their main group. And the ewe in front decided to go shopping. She was the catalyst that let about 50 sheep into a discount supermarket. Ironically, the chain of markets operates with the slogan: “First, go to Penny!”

Ragtag Daily Prompt: Catalyst

The trouble with tallies

I use tallies to communicate numbers with my illiterate, non-German speaking students. Easy, I thought before the first time I tried it. I had to learn that tallying – you know, four vertical lines and one diagonal one signifies five – is not a universal concept. Even the ones that had some schooling do not know the concept. Quite a few have a hard time understanding and learning it.

PS re: the title – Yes, I just had a famous episode of Star Trek on my you tube feed.

Incipient jowls

Sometimes I check up on a prompt with either a synonym dictionary or a German-English dictionary simply because my photos are tagged in German and I want a few options when I’m looking for a fitting photo. Funnily, this time “incipient” had four adjective translations on dict.leo.org and the first noun given was “incipient jowls”. I immediately knew what I was going to post.

I mean, look at the guy. That kind of mutton chops must be worn to conceal incipient jowls! Why else!

PS: In case you’re wondering it’s the German emperor Wilhelm I, how he is usually depicted on war memorials in remembrance of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71, the last one “we” “won”.
