When I see these two castles in the distance, I know I’m coming home. No matter what the weather, no matter what time of the year, or even what year it is. I lived in different parts of the world for more than 30 years but these two castles always spelt home for me.

It seems, once the tulips are out (not yet this year!) the temptation to tiptoe through them is a great one.

There I was in the middle of the forest with no map, no reception for the map on the phone, and no sense of direction – until I chanced upon an old style signpost. Hurrah! — Hurrah? What a muddle!
An old sign for a coffee bar in Neustadt an der Weinstraße might not be all that appealing – yet in our current times the idea of sitting in a coffee shop or a bar or a restaurant with other people, friends or even strangers, has become very appealing indeed. Let’s hope that such a simple pleasure is soon again possible.
But the name of the place lets me wonder … while “Schluckebier” is a normal, if not very common, name in German it can be rendered as “beer for quaffing”. How appealing is that?
