Ngiyabonga! for an awesome rugby game
I had planned something else for today but as it is I am swept away by the my husband’s enthusiasm for the South African rugby team and their winning the Webb Ellis cup this morning (it was evening in Japan). “Ngiyabonga” means thank you, addressed to the team, in Zulu.

And now for something completely different. This photo is from the South Africa vs Scotland game during the Rugby World Championship 2015 (one of the only two international matches I have ever been to). It’s really not fair to post a photo from a rugby match for this topic as you can just point the camera and something is happening. But I thought I’d share this tender moment between Francois Louw and Schalk Burger just before a line out (at any other time, this gesture might have been misunderstood):

Well, it happened …
In 2015, my husband and I went to the Rugby World Championship in the UK. We saw two games: South Africa vs. Samoa in Birmingham, and South Africa vs. Scotland in Newcastle.
It was an unexpected and unlikely coincidence that we met a cameraman working for the SABC in Birmingham while sightseeing in town, a day before the game. It was quite unlikely that we would meet him again in Newcastle, this time with his whole team trying to catch interesting shots and interviews with fans, again a day before the game. But the cameraman recognised my husband with whom he had talked for awhile privately a week earlier, and so he came to be interviewed by South African television. But it was even more unlikely that a South African friend actually saw the clip, barely a minute long, tucked away in a late-night special human interest slot about the RWC.
But the most unlikely would be if we ever see people dressed up more patriotic than the South African fans on this day. The most impressive ones were the “cross dressers” – fans who combined Scottish and South African elements in their attire:

Behind the Boks
I was lucky to attend the game between the Scottish and South African rugby teams in Newcastle in, part of the 2015 Rugby World Cup. What better setting to take pictures of a very colourful crowd? The Springbok supporters were out in full force. Hats and make-up are a wonderful way to camouflage faces, aren’t they?

Howay the lads!
This is St James’ Park, the football stadium in Newcastle-upon-Tyne which last year was hosting matches of the Rugby World Championship. It is in the middle of the city close to the university, Newcastle’s Chinatown, the shopping and business district.
“Howay the lads” (meaning” Come on, boys!”) is the battle cry of Newcastle United.
