I’m a Fan of the Kanzelbach

The village of Schriesheim, less than 10 kms to the south of us, has a stream running through the village called Kanzelbach. This is not unusual since Schriesheim is built on the slopes of the Odenwald like many other towns and villages along the Bergstraße. Streams descend from the hills, cross the plain and join the River Rhein.

But in Schriesheim they did something special to their little waterway as you can see.

Strahlenberger School

Strahlenburg is the castle ruin above the town of Schriesheim at the Bergstraße. The local school is quite logically called Strahlenberger Schule. It’s quite a typical primary school building around here.

What caught my eye were the windows decorated for Easter or maybe just spring.

But the real eye-catcher were the reflections in the various panels.

A Little Knowledge

When I saw this sign at the entrance of an old inn I was wondering about the meaning of it.

An old fashioned beer mug. That’s self-explanatory.

Hearts, Diamonds, spades, and clubs. I have placed a few games of Skat in my youth, so I understand that as well.

A Star of David – here it unravels. What does it have to do with an inn?

That’s where research comes in. The hexagram may look like a Star of David but it is the symbol of the Guild of Brewers. And that makes sense, naturally.

Play bridge

Bridges can offer wonderful perspectives.

This one crosses the river Neckar from Seckenheim to Ilvesheim.

And like this bridge for pedestrians and cyclists in Frankfurt over the river Main called Holbeinsteg.

And some look best with their surroundings like this one over the river Neckar in Heidelberg (which has a monkey the left bank – which coincidentally features in Geriatrix’ post today).

And some look beautiful close up, decrepit as they are, like this over the little stream in Schriesheim.

And some are mere boards crossing a stream for only a few hours. Check out Geriatrix’ Fotogallery for the story behind this little bridge.
