I’ve posted a photo of the dangling prey in a local photo group to ask what they thought what kind of animal the heron had caught. Hedgehog was discounted, rat and mouse advanced – which I didn’t really believe as I could see no tail whatsoever. And the latest idea is a hamster. The size fits, and it has a darker back and lighter belly. Whatever it was: may it rest in peace.
