A Whole Village
Bornheim is a part of Frankfurt that still has some of the characteristics of a village even though it is located very centrally. This is the sign of the local museum, featuring the motto of Bornheim: the jolly village. Apparently , the moniker stems from the traditional Ebbelwoi pubs that are found there. Ebbelwoi is the name for the local (very, very sour) cider. Does that mean the inhabitants walk around with a permanent smile on their faces? I’ll check if I’ll be there again.

Smiles all round with these two life-size sculptures in the middle of Koblenz in the Rhine valley. They depict a market-woman and a policeman illustrating an old joke which is written on a plaque in the local dialect (about Norbert’s dog who peed on the leg of the market-woman’s husband).

Smile on Chuckles
I didn’t know her but this plaque on a bench overlooking Roker Beach in Sunderland made me smile. What a great way to be remembered – by passing your smile on to complete strangers.
