Coming into His Colours
A male juvenile mallard hasn’t quite finished putting on his shiny head dress.
It’s better visible from the side. His friend is a bit further along but not all his shiny feathers are there yet.

I don’t know if this duck was just grooming himself but the way he is hanging his head I think he looks like he is grappling with some serious sorrow.

Shades of Brown Next to Other Colours
The cinnamon coloured carpels contrast beautifully with the yellow petals of the tickseed.
A white hen juxtaposed with the tawny hen.
Beautiful chocolate wool contrasted by momma’s beige wool.
Nutty duck: Walnut and almond coloured feathers offest by emerald and indigo.
And this young drake is still changing his colours to produce the striking contrast of the mature bird.

Ducktails
Before taking photos I had never noticed that curlicue at the tail of male mallards. It is quite distinct and rather pretty, probably with no other function than impressing the female of the species.
These two were quite obliging in showing off the difference between the genders.
Close-up anyone?
And of course, there is no leaving out the pun.

PS: The title is a word pun crossing German-English lines. Mallards are called “stock ducks” (Stockenten) in German.
