I don’t like the word “window shopping” for this small tradition in our family, it’s a leisurely stroll enjoying the lights and the seasonal displays. It usually happens during the time we call “between the years”, i.e. between Christmas and New Year when all the shopping (and running and rushing) is over.

Builders often write the year the house was built, often together with their name or initials, somewhere over a door or a window. This is just a small collection from close to where I live, all done in rose-tinted sandstone, which is often used in our area.

The theme is “windows”. Walls form borders; windows and doors are the holes in them. While doors are thresholds that can be crossed, windows allow for a more careful approach. Observations in both directions are possible.
