On a Not So Clear Day

you can’t see forever and ever but still pretty far.

This is the view from the Tromm, one of the highest mountains / hills in the Odenwald towards the west. The Wachenburg, a fortress I normally look up to, can be seen in the middle and beyond is the Rhine Valley. On a clear day one can see the hills of the Palatinate in the distance on the other side of the river.

The same view on another day at a different time of day:

Is It the Tower or Am I Slant Eyed?

When the old tower was condemned because the wood was rotten they built a new one. It’s slanted.

The new tower adds 34 metres to the 577m of the (a hill in the Odenwald), has 192 steps, the inclination angle to the horizontal level is 54,3°.  And the panoramic view is amazing – given the correct weather conditions, naturally.

Ladder in the Sky

The Odenwald, the low mountain range to the east of us, sports a new tower. On top of the Tromm (a mountain/hill of 577m altitude) stood the Irene Tower (named after the Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria) but the wooden construction was destroyed by rot and bark beetles and demolished in 2020. In its place the new Tromm Tower was erected, a beautiful, modern construction made of wood and metal. It’s beautiful, modern, 33 m high, leaning over the side of the hill and granting a beautiful 360° panoramic view of the Odenwald. It opened to the public in June this year.
