Art for Vincent’s Sake

I should really have my text preceding this series.

I took a photo of a plum tree in bloom. I liked the colour and the light in the background and it looked almost like an impressionist painting, even without any editing. I played around with it using various photoscape features and then I remembered where I had seen a plum tree in bloom before.

Prunes en fleur by Vincent van Gogh

I had to tweak the colour a bit but the similarity is there, is it not?

Vincent van Gogh’s painting “Flowering plumtrees” can be admired in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

A martyr to art

Les oliviers by Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh has been called a martyr to his art. But from his suffering came the most glorious paintings.

This one hangs in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.

play list?

I don’t really have a playlist of favourite songs as such. If I need a pick-me-up I rather go to books or films. Last week I linked one of my favourite TV scenes ever on this blog and I do so again. It is when the eleventh doctor (from Doctor Who if anybody needs this additional information) and Amy Pond take Vincent van Gogh, who thinks his paintings are worthless and just generally questions his talents, to a gallery in his future (our present) featuring his paintings. Bill Nighy is giving a rhapsodic speech about van Gogh’s art and Vincent is overwhelmed listening to it. It moves me every time.

A screenshot of the scene. Vincent is hugging the museum guide.

Otherwise, although I sing badly (and having been told so often) I like sing-a-longs with friends, the louder and the bawdier, the better. The latter is the reason why I don’t publicise my playlist.

… to the sublime

Something painted … why not a tie-in with Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge from last week: store signs.

And a little less refined (but all the more charming):

A sign at a pick & pay flower field. It reads: “We are the family Eichenauer. Please pay correctly!” And no, I don’t know why Claudia is allowed to sit.
A detail from a (well used) painted tray.

Some of my favourite painted “items” hang in museums. These are from the Scottish National Gallery:

Jules Bastien-Lepage: Pas mèche (There is nothing doing)
Sir Daniel Macnee: Lady in Grey

I like these two paintings because they are very lifelike, particularly the faces could be photographs – before there were real good photographs. The next painting I like is because … well, it isn’t like a photograph at all:

Vincent van Gogh – Les oliviers (The olive trees)

If you have the time, you can check out one of my favourite scenes from Dr. Who here. Vincent van Gogh, the deeply troubled and sad artist, is taken to a modern day exhibition of his works.

Olive trees

Les oliviers van Gogh

After having played around with merging photos with famous painting styles, here is a photo of an original of Vincent van Gogh: Les oliviers.  The painting is hanging in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh.

For One Word Photo Challenge: paint.  More photos of paint or possibly, paintings can be found here.
