People and Trees
The old man and the trees
More trees, more people.
And two cute little monkeys in a tree.

More Precious than Gold and Silver
“Jeder grüne Baum ist trotz allem wertvoller als einem (sic) der aus Gold und Silber wäre.”
Martin Luther
“For all that every green tree is more precious than one that were made of gold and silver.”
Living on the slopes of the Odenwald, and looking across the Rhine Valley to the Pfälzer Wald (“Wald” meaning forest in German), woods are close to my heart.
The Odenwald consists of mixed forests but beech is predominant in our area. And it is glorious at this time of year, the leaves all new and fresh and bright green.

Here is your big surprise:
He tried:
He didn’t:
If you go down to the woods today
You’re sure of a big surprise
If you go down to the woods today
You’d better go in disguise.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain,
Because today’s the day
The Teddy Bears have their picnic.

Limited contact walking
We can’t go far because of the rules for social distancing (which is a misnomer, really, physical distancing would be a better name for it) but we are allowed out of the house to go for a walk or to go shopping. We can go for a walk in the company of persons from the same household. So we combined grocery shopping and driving a small distance to go for a walk in the local woods. The trees are still bare and the ground is covered with brown leaves from last autumn but looking a bit closer one can find the first fresh green leaves and also flowers, in this case heath violets, pilewort, and wood anemone. I’m not quite sure how the grape hyacinth got into that part of the woods but there it was.

Common denominator
“Look up!” they said. So I looked up. And realised that

looking up in the forest

can be different to looking up in the city. Except, it isn’t. Not really.

Being on the other end, being lookup up at, sort of, can result in strange effects of the brain.
I’ll stick to looking up. Even on clear days, the sky may offer something to see.
