Tag: Weinheim an der Bergstraße

It’s a dangerous business, going out of your door.

It might have been for Frodo or Bilbo but it wasn’t for me when I stepped out this afternoon.

That’s the furthest I can see without going further than 50 steps from our front door. In the distance in the West is the Palatium mountain range, in between are the cities of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen and the breadth of the Upper Rhine Valley, around 40km at this point.

A look to left, and a look to the right. The area used to be a mixture of residential buildings and farmsteads but today only a couple of farmers are left around us.

And finally I managed an inadvertent selfie (I’m the small orange blob in the mirror). The old wall belongs to our next door neighbour, the sandstone blocks are encircling our front yard.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Walk 50 Steps or Less

Filtered Blue

The last few weeks (months?) the sky has been relentlessly blue. So we went for a walk in the Exotenwald in Weinheim rather than in the open where there is little protection of sun. Whenever we looked up – the sky was blue. Here we are looking up at one of the 60m tall sequoias which are about 150 years old.

What Would We Be without Our Verein?

Germans love to organise themselves in clubs, called “Verein”. This particular one is dedicated to uphold the traditions of Weinheim. The somewhat long and cumbersome name stems from the fact that it is an amalgamation of two clubs, none of which wanted to give up their traditional name.

Home

When I was looking for a photo for Debbie’s challenge today, I knew I wanted to show a photo of the neighbourhood I grew up in. I found this one, the houses of the old part of town where I used to play, the old town wall that bordered our garden, the Schlosspark with the pond behind, and the medieval tower which watched over it all. And then I noticed that I hadn’t taken this photo myself. The photographer was our grandson. Heritage in more ways than one.

Are We Having Fun Yet?

I don’t care that much for the water park in our town itself (from my earliest experiences working there as kitchen drudge to being forced on the bigger slides because the grandchildren weren’t allowed on their own yet due to age) but it makes for a colourful feature in the suburbs.

In winter it looks very different, yet still colourful:

And finally a shot at the end of the day:
