What the Dickens?

I certainly had great expectations when I entered this door for the first time, almost 60 years ago. Were these expectations fulfilled?  FOWC with Fandango: Expectation

Das Weinheimer Turnerbad

The local swimming pool, called alternatively Turnerbad (sporting pool, because it belongs to the local sporting club), Waldschwimmbad (forest pool because of the surrounding woods) or Freibad (free pool because it has no roof) has a special forlorn atmosphere in winter. Water, Water Everywhere

Blue Skies Can Be Deceptive

It might have been sunny on this day but the flag flying in the stiff breeze tells a different story: it’s windy.

Sometimes the wind around this castle ruin – appropriately called Windeck (windy corner) – is so strong that it splits the white and blue flag.

I don’t mind the cold as such – there is proper clothing to protect against it. But what really makes me cold is:

A fierce wind that goes through ones bones is what makes me cold.

On a Not So Clear Day

you can’t see forever and ever but still pretty far.

This is the view from the Tromm, one of the highest mountains / hills in the Odenwald towards the west. The Wachenburg, a fortress I normally look up to, can be seen in the middle and beyond is the Rhine Valley. On a clear day one can see the hills of the Palatinate in the distance on the other side of the river.

The same view on another day at a different time of day:

October Could Have Fooled Me

We’ve had it far too warm for the last few weeks. On Friday evening we could sit outside in t-shirts and it was balmy, like a proper summer evening. We were warned that the weather would change this weekend and I’ve seen on the news there was snow in the north east (about 750km distance) but we had this view on our Sunday stroll and I was wearing a long-sleeved tee. If you told me it was early September or even spring – I would have believed you.

Late Recognition

That’s the war memorial in my home town. It was erected in 1936 and all the dead of world war I were registered. Except for four of them. It you look closely you see the four last ones on this list, not in alphabetical order and slightly different in colour. It’s because they were Jewish Germans who had fought and died alongside their Christian German comrades. During the Nazi era they were not acknowledged. Their names were added in 1946.
