Asinine Wine Growers

The small winegrower village of Mußbach in the Palatinate has a Weinlage (smaller than a wine appellation but consisting of a number of vineyards) called “Eselshaut” (skin of an ass). The name is supposed to relate to the grass growing around the vines and which was harvested to feed the donkeys.

Images of donkeys abound all over the town in crests and emblems and sculptures. I found this red one particularly asinine … fetching.

How Much Does the Vintage Matter to You?
2017 was not an easy year for wine in the Alsace. Frost in spring and a very early harvest resulted in low quantity but good quality. Overall, 2017 was a good vintage.

Another Bright Idea
Going on a wine walk is a grand tradition. All the wine growers of an area get together, plan a route through the vineyards, put up stalls along the way where you can sit and eat and more importantly, sample the local wine. Then you move on until you find the next stall that looks inviting. But – you want to take your glass of wine with you and you want to have your hands free when walking. These glass holders are a really bright idea!
The trails may be up to 20 km. But never fear: The organisers usually organise a shuttle service to collect stranded hikers or have different access points that lead to the local bus service.

Where to start?
Eschudel’s word for the Ragtag Daily Prompt for today is wine.
I live in a town which is called Weinheim, where wine is grown and the city arms features a wine ladder.
So I stop right here. —
