I was really puzzled by this notice I came across in a piece of wood in the Palatium:
Careful! Wood!
These trees are actually woodland.
Enter at your own risk.
Branches might fall down and trees might fall over.
Please stay out on windy days.
Don’t stand underneath the trees and do not park there.

I’ve learned that forests are unpredictable. As are public notices in the Palatium.

When Germans are on the wrong track, they call it “being on the wooden path”. In my hometown, we even have road named accordingly.
If you find yourself in such a predicament, why keep going? Find a place to sit down and relax. Preferably on a wooden bench.
And in case it takes a bit longer, make sure you have a good book on you to pass the time.

When we meet up with our group on Sundays, we follow a pre-laid trail. Once in a while we encounter a sign spelling SV. SV stands for “scenic view”. This normally signifies a look over a sweeping landscape. Occasionally it might also be an idyllic scene, a pond or a clearing or possibly a monument.
This Sunday it was neither sweeping nor idyllic, it was just odd.
There were wooden figures but embellished with odd toys and artificial flowers and strange artifacts. The wooden figures were stern and bleak, the additions however, were kind of menacing: a doll left in the weather looks scary after even a few days.
It was a really weird place.

Before wood can be used it has to be left alone for a while.
In some parts of Germany, houses are still clad in wooden shingles.
More old shingles and the open panels of a tobacco drying shed.
Here the panels are applied vertical.

Situated in Oberotterbach, close to the French-German border, there is the Waldgeisterweg, a shortish woodland path lined with bizarre or whimsical goblins and gnomes and imps which the artist Volker Dahl has carved from old broken trees and roots.
At one point there is this sign on a tree with a prompt in the local vernacular: “Oy, why don’t you look up!”
And a few metres higher up there is this sign:
The museum of Michelstadt is in house built almost 500 years ago. The wooden beams are old
and beautiful.
