Fences without the Colour

Leanne mentioned in her weekly Monochrome Madness that she didn’t like a particular fence so I took my cue from there.

It’s an ugly fence but it serves its purpose to keep pedestrians away from the highway.

The fence Leanne didn’t like was near a railway track so here is a different take of “fence & track”.

And because she is Australian I had to add this fence and sign with an Australian flavour. I don’t know what the poor roo did to deserve its place on a sign that warns of “landmines” (a name for doggy poo that can only be considered funny in a land where actual landmines haven’t been seen in a long time).

All Purpose Fences

Fences make for good neighbours. Chatting over a fence is a time honoured pastime. It has the advantage that it keeps the opponents separate.

Fences can also have an important purpose. It can keep toads from being squashed by cars when they have the unsquashable urge to get to the pond were they were spawned. It makes them wait until they are collected and carried over the road.

The fence may be rusty but it is collecting new dummies from toddlers who want to give up an outgrown habit.

Fences can be overcome, sometimes only partially. It depends on the temptation on the other side.

Of course, there are always masters of the art.

Hallo, Nachbar!

Hi there, neighbour!

“Love your neighbor as yourself; but don’t take down the fence.”

Carl Sandburg

Even in garden gnome society this seems to be a followed adage.

And certainly, some neighbours may be cute but you do not want them on your side of the fence.

I don’t know that the fence will keep those neighbours on their side, though.

And there are some neighbours who will be welcomed even if they have to climb that fence to come over.

This last one is more of an oddball – I know the sign is meant to warn passers-by of beehives but the fence lets one wonder how big those bees actually are …
