Go Jump in the Lake

Our local excavation lake was created in the late 1960s as a byproduct of the building of the autobahn between Darmstadt and Heidelberg, as were about eight others. They all have become local recreation centres which add to the quality of life in our area.

The water levels rise and fall depending on the seasons and the weather. After good rains it is brimming with water.

On the west side is the harbour for the sailing club with berthing facilities for small boats.

On the east side is a public swimming area with facilities where an entrance fee is charged. But some people want the freedom of unsupervised swimming at all hours. Strictly speaking swimming is not allowed outside the controlled area, but the bight lovingly christened “Bay of Pigs” by the local youths has been tolerated by the local authorities.

The official swimming area has a proper sabulous area, aka a beach, with sand brought from outside. In the water buoys demarcate the areas reserved for swimming, boating and diving.

Lifeguards are guarding the lake during summer but during the colder times of the year their duties are taken over by year round residents.
