OEG: Oh, ewiges Gewackel – O, everlasting jiGgling!

One of the first tramlines between towns jn Germany (as opposed to inner-city lines) was the OEG (Oberrheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft) which ran (and still runs) on a circular track between Mannheim – Weinheim – Heidelberg.  Today it is connected to various other tram systems serving the larger Rhein-Neckar-area.  Locally, it is still affectionally known as OEG = Oh, Ewiges Gewackel, or O, Everlasting jiGgling, even though the carriages are much more comfortable today.  The official name – Linie 5 – has not caught on.

  1. It can be so hard to change habit. 🙂 Great photos! We’ll be in Germany later in May, but we’ll be floating up the Rhine on a river cruise boat, so I don’t think we’ll get a chance to try the electric train. Thanks for joining the challenge!

    1. That’s fun. Don’t tell me you are doing the Amsterdam to Vienna cruise? A friend of ours whom we haven’t seen in twenty years and now lives in Canada is doing just that and we are planning to meet her and her husband when they dock at one of the stops.

      1. I think it’s a great way to explore Europe. Much better than in a coach stuck on the roads. I hope you’ll have enough time to explore on your stops. If you stop in Rüdesheim, do take the cable car tour, it’s well worth it. My friend says they are doing a Heidelberg tour from Frankfurt (which is about a 90 minute coach ride on the autobahn away). Also beautiful, and you will pass my hometown on the left 😀
