A few years ago I came across this sign in Frankfurt. I found it intriguing and yes, odd. I had no idea what that animal, if it actually is one, was supposed to be. I’ve since seen a few more signs with the same creature in different poses, unfortunately I don’t always carry my camera.
Yesterday – finally! – I found out the story behind it. The creature was sitting happily on a pedestrian bridge crossing the river Nidda.
And a sign beneath it proclaimed it to be the GrünGürtel-Tier.
This is a play on words which needs to be explained: Gürteltier is a actually an armadillo but literally a belt anmial, Grüngürtel is the greenbelt surrounding a city for urban recreation, hence this is the GreenBelt Animal. Rather whimsical, I think.

Deutsche wurde meine zweite Sprache, eigentlich Schwyzertütsch, zwar ich kann es nicht perfekt schreiben. Ich habe alles verstanden, sehr interessante Fotos. Vor viele Jahren war ich einmal in Frankfurt gewesen, eine schöne Stadt.

Schwyzerdütsch ist ja auch nicht wirklich was zum Schreiben, und in jedem Kanton wird anders geschrieben, selbst in den Kantonen unterschiedlich. Hut ab, wenn du dir Schwyzerdütsch aneignen konntest, für die meisten Deutschen ist es ein Buch mit sieben Siegeln. Schweizer Filme werden hier synchronisiert oder mit Untertiteln versehen. – Freut mich, wenn du die Fotos interessant fandest. Frankfurt gilt nicht allgemein als schöne Stadt, im Gegenteil, aber ich mag es (wir wohnen gut 80km weg davon), und es hat ausgesprochen viele grüne Anteile.

Ich bin mit ein Schweizer seit fast 50 Jaren verheiratet und wohnen in Solothurn. Ich spreche Schweizerdeutsch die ganzen Tag, zwar mein Mann kann auch english (ich bin eigentlich von London). Schwyzertütsch ist grundsätzlich nicht ein Schriftsprache aber ich kann es lesen und schreiben wenn nötig. Und ich lese viel deutsche Bücher. Ich ziehe vor Bücher in Originalsprache zu lesen wenn möglich.
