This insect puzzled me a great deal when it landed close to my feet in the middle of a snowfield last week. As it turns out it is not an anomaly of nature but a winter crane fly which is supposed to be out in the snow. Who knew?

Apparently called mosquito killer in North America although they eat a bit of nectar if anything at all (and procreate and die – what a life!)
