Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? No, it’s a hawk moth!

The first time I saw this incredible insect I thought it was a hummingbird. Yet – there are no hummingbirds in Europe! I was dumbfounded.

Luckily, I had a knowledgeable friend with me who explained about the hawk moth to me, a hummingbird hawk moth in this case so I wasn’t too far off and not alone in my mistake. It’s not a very common moth but not that rare either and I was delighted that I managed a few shots of the insect while it was feeding.

  1. That’s incredible. I’ve only ever seen a hummingbird hawk moth once. Sounded a poor thing was that at that point. Your photos are amazing. I love how you did as he could slide them back and forth. Never seen the option to do that. Well done!

  2. Arn’t they lovely? We often get them in the garden during the Summer, especially on the Buddleia. It is one of those insects I did not know in England so only knew the German name from my Swiss husband. We call them Schwärmer, but now I also know them as hawk moth.
