they grew tobacco in this region. It’s not profitable anymore and when the last EU subsidies ceased in 2010, the last leaf was grown commercially. The large, airy sheds where the leaves were hung up to dry are still to be seen in the towns where the tobacco industry once flourished.

They look worse than they actually are – because of the air flow needed for tobacco drying the walls are built with holes in them. But their purpose is gone so they will have to be remodelled.

Tobacco’s grown in some quite odd places, isn’t it? Parts of France and Spain too. Sort of … unexpected.

This is Heppenheim, a town in the Kurpfalz in Germany. That’s in the Rhine valley, between Heidelberg and Mannheim.
