Another six week or so

Hornbacher Steinhäusel

This melody, as well as the accompanying text, is known by most German children. It’s sung on the day of St Nicolas when children are waiting for dark to fall and St Nicolas coming by and putting little presents in the prepared boots.

Let us all be cheery and bright
and look forward to Nicolas' night.
Merrily, merrily, ding ding dong!
It's Nicolas' evening before too long.

It’s written on the picturesque house façade of this house in Hornbach:

The Ragtag Daily Prompt: Melody

  1. Of course I know that song. I went for a search in Youtube and found it, also common in Switzerland. As I have the unfortunate coincidence of having my birthday on 6th December I quickly discovered when moving to Switzerland that I had to share it with millions of german speaking children in Europe eating peanuts and “Gritibänz” a bread we make for the day in the shape of a man. If you are a Bänz you might be a bit stupid.

    1. 😀 A South African friend of mine was living in Germany when she got pregnant and happen to have the baby on 6 December. An hour or so after the delivery the gynae came to check on her. As he was on his way to play Nikolaus at the children’s ward he came in costume. My friend for years believed that this was a German custom: qafter a successful delivery, the gynae would check on mother and baby dressed as Santa. 🤣😂🤣
