The Man in Pink

The man in pink is Nigel Owens, well-known Welsh rugby union referee, telling the scrum what to do. This was the game Scotland v. South Africa in Newcastle in pool B of the Rugby Wold Cup 2015.

And this is why I like rugby (as compared to say, football or soccer):

    1. I love rugby. Football (soccer in my South African English) doesn’t interest me, I find it mostly boring. But even though I know only the bare minimum of rules rugby can be very exciting and the thrill of an attack with the ball being passed down the line is awesome. But what I like most is the atmosphere. Football fans in Germany have to be kept apart in the stadium and on the streets and in the trains before and after a game. Rugby fans can clap when the opposing team plays well and I have seen a whole pub in Newcastle get up and shake the hand of a single Australian after Australia kicked England out of the competition (world cup in their own country).

      1. That’s nice to hear – and others have said similar things. What it comes down to … is that I was That Girl who loathed team sports at school. Better to take my punishment for ‘forgetting’ my kit …. again.

      2. I didn’t like P.E. either. But in Germany that’s different anyway. Team sports are played in clubs, outside school. In school, if they are offered, it’s voluntary. 😃 And I only started liking rugby once we had left South Africa.
