Once upon a time I took a course in calligraphy. I never liked just copying clever quotes, I would rather use my own texts. I never got very good, I should have practiced more but then computers with fancy scripts became affordable and for me the skill became obsolete. But I kept a few of my favourite limericks including the odd ink stain.
When computer technology changes or fails, files might disappear, but inked works are always at arm’s reach.

I used to be keen on calligraphy. These days, with all those computer fonts, I can’t quite think why.

Are kids even taught cursive writing skills anymore? Calligraphy is so beautiful, though.

If it is well done, yes. In Germany, children are taught cursive. They also still have to write with a fountain pen at school.
