In Frankfurt – and the whole of southern Hesse – the drink of choice is cider, or rather: Apfelwein – considerably more astringent (otherwise known as sour) as English, French or Swiss cider. There are quite a few inns that will not serve beer but only Ebbelwoi or Äppler as it is called in the regional dialect.

One of these is the “Buchscheer” in the Frankfurt suburb “Louisa”, which has been going for more than 140 years. Ebbelwoi is drunk from special glasses with lozenge cut for improved grip; they are called Geripptes (with ribs).

It is sold by glass or in open grey and blue stoneware jugs called Bembel.

I love those little jugs 🙂

They are not little – depending on the size of the group at the table (or the size of their thirst) they are 2 to 6 litres. The one litre jugs are considered devorative fru-fru for tourists 😉

How interesting! I would have thought that the stereotypical German beer would be the regional choice in Frankfurt. I also like the Bembel.

There IS a lot of beer in Frankfurt (the big local beers are Henninger and Binding – I’ve had better) but all pubs and inns serve Ebbelwoi. In summer you get it as a spritzer mixed with carbonated water (very refreshing!) and in winter you get it hot, similar to a mulled wine.
