Jude has posted about British postboxes in what we would call “fire station red”. German postboxes are typically yellow but evidently that was not always the case. I found these blue ones in Michelstadt and in Schwetzingen respectively, both date back to the late 19th century. The one in Michelstadt is still in use but I don’t know about the one from Schwetzingen. Both date back to the late 19th century.

Interesting stuff! I do think red is the Proper Colour for a post box though.

The German yellow is due to the crest of the house of Thurn und Taxis who founded the European postal services. For me red means fire – it’s the proper colour of fire engines. 😀

These are very ornate. You wouldn’t get many letters in them though, unless they are bigger than they look! Thanks for the share 😊

They are not. German letterboxes are usually hanging and this size, with very few standing ones.
