Bad hair day? And typo alert … species’. Your English is so very good, I hope you don’t mind my noticing when it’s not quite right – words finishing with s are a b*****.
Thanks. No I don’t mind. I make a lot more typos than I used to. But here I don’t get it, it’s agenitive-s, isn’t it? The problem of one specie. Or am I missing something?
Actually, you are right. But it’s become one of those words that modern usage has all-but obliterated. You stick to your guns: I haven’t seem specie written outside a specialised text book for years, but it’s the text books – and you – which are correct. It’s been the case before that non-native speakers are more correct than those who were born here!
I think it looks weird because it’s one of those rare words in English ending with -ie. Add a hyphen to that and the brain starts knotting. I was unsure about it when I typed it.

Oh, great capture! And I see Margaret has corrected you, so I don’t need to…. your errors are so rare

I don’t mind if people point out typos (how else would I learn?) but see my answer to Margaret – I don’t see it. (admittedly, it looks weird)
