That’s the war memorial in my home town. It was erected in 1936 and all the dead of world war I were registered. Except for four of them. It you look closely you see the four last ones on this list, not in alphabetical order and slightly different in colour. It’s because they were Jewish Germans who had fought and died alongside their Christian German comrades. During the Nazi era they were not acknowledged. Their names were added in 1946.

Some recognition at last….

Objectively “only” 14 years later. But 992 years in nazi reckoning (1933-1945 was supposed to be the one thousands year reich).

So even at the time of WWI they weren’t considered citizens? Oh, yes, I see, this monument wasn’t erected till the 1930s.

Right, you got it. It looks pretty barbaric and that’s why there is a current discussion about removing the statues of three soldiers in winter gear marching to their drum. The lists of the fallen (killed, really) soldiers of 14-18, which the larger list of those soldiers who died between 39-48 would be left untouched.

The wordpress algorithm washed this post of mine in the feed. There you can see the three in all their “glory”. https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/2021/11/25/responsibility-to-history/
