Wild guess: It used to be a “Hofreite”, i.e. a farmhouse with stables in a village, i.e. not isolated. And when the town grew and the farmers moved outside, they changed the buildings into apartments and the large gates weren’t needed anymore. What do you think?
Makes me wonder what the history is behind this window. It is a nice one, though.

Sounds plausible – and fun. It’s probably a better story than the real one.
