The drink of choice in Frankfurt is Ebbelwoi. Since the name is a dialect word there are numerous ways to write it: Ebbelwoi, Äppelwoi, Äppelwei, Äppler, and sometimes they call it Schoppe or Stöffsche. Often translated as cider but the only thing it has in common with cider is that it is also made of apples. It is rather tart if not to say sour, served as spritzer in summer it cannot be beat for its refreshing taste.
There are still authentic Ebbelwoi pubs around, this one’s is called Buchscheer in a suburb called Louisa, and it’s more than 140 years old – rather young compared with some of the traditional Ebbelwoi pubs in Sachsenhausen, the fun part of Frankfurt.

An authentic Ebbelwoi Wertschaft will not serve beer at all (or even coffee, for crying out loud!), so I apologise for the next photo. But it shows off the traditional glass in which ebbelwoi is served, a so-called Geripptes.

Ordering it by glass has become more common these days, it used to be served in a “bembel”, a large grey stoneware jug with characteristic blue decorations.
Not authentic but combining tradition with a modern twist, I give you the Bembel of the Frankfurt Hash House Harriers. You cannot buy it, you are given it as a farewell present when you finally leave the area for good and everybody is just happy to see the back of you.

I suppose that’s how Apple cider drink originated. I like that jug!

I’m not sure, English cider (and for that matter French cidre) not only tastes different, apparently the production method is also a different one. – I like those jugs, too. 😊

No, not those particular ones as I am still running with the Frankfurt Hash / H3. But I have a similar one. I also have a salt pot looking similar, with a rhinoceros on it, bought in Zimbabwe. 😄

I’m not a fan of cider, but could probably get behind a glass of your local tipple!

It’s really, really sour. An acquired taste, I suppose. In winter you can get in a mulled version, and they do put in sugar and spices.
