When I think of succulents my mind turns towards exotic plants like cacti and particularly the succulents found in the South African Karoo (apparently one third of all succulents species). But – the common house leek found on any old roof around here and on walls and the like is a succulent, too.

Interesting that they grow on rooftops. We don’t see that here, but I have them in my garden. I’ve only known them as Hens and Chicks.

I’ve read that hens&chicks name as well. They are mainly found on really old roofs, in need of new tiles and general repairs.

Just their name in German “wurz” sounds weird (to me). It’s half a “root” (Wurzel) and it grows in (or on?) houses. I just feel the word would be suited to a much bigger plant not such a small, dainty little thing.

It is a weird word for a little plant. It has a big sound as you say better for bigger plants 🙂
